About Daisychain JewelleryMy designs are a blend of sterling silver, fine silver, Hill Tribe silver (see below), gemstones and lampwork beads. Sterling silver is silver that is at least 92.5% pure with 7.5% of another metal to make it harder. The other metal is usually copper. Hill Tribe silver is handcrafted using traditional methods by the Karen Hill Tribe in Thailand. The silver content is usually between 95% and 99%, higher than that of sterling silver. Each piece is unique. The fine silver I use is in the form of silver art clay, a materials consisting of microscopic particles of fine silver mixed with a non-toxic organic binder. The clay can be moulded, stamped into and cut into shape. The binder burns out during firing leaving behind fine silver. Fine silver has a silver content of 99% silver. Silver tarnishes naturally. The best way to help prevent tarnishing store silver jewellery in air tight plastic bags in a cool, dry environment. You can also buy anti-tarnish strips – Lakeland sell some. Tarnish can be removed using a silver cleaning cloth but please be careful not to polish the beads on your jewellery. Lampwork beads are carefully made and strengthened but all glass can vulnerable if hit against something hard or exposed to extreme changes of temperature. |
